Women hold 'Slutwalk' to shatter sexual stereotype in New Delhi

NEW DELHI: Raising their voice against sexual stereotype and gender prejudice rampant across India, hundreds of women participated in the first ever 'Slutwalk' in New Delhi on Sunday.

Amid much hype, the 'Slutwalk', held in the heart of the national capital, saw active attendance of scores of activists and locals from all walks of life, who urged the society to change the attitude of judging women based on their attire.

Organised by the 'Besharmi Morcha', a civil society forum working against sexual violence, the movement aimed at putting forth a serious message-no matter what the attire, sexual assault is unjustified.

Shouting slogans and raising posters and placards, activists vented their ire at the common chauvinistic prejudice that aims to allegedly justify sexual aggregation by blaming the action on 'provocatory dresses worn by the victim.

Extending solidarity with the cause, certain activists said the campaign could help dispel attitudes and double standards about sexual assault.

"We are organising a protest against the sick mindset of the society that decides to blame women rather than perpetrators of the crime," said Neha Sharma, an activist from the Besharmi Morcha.

'Slutwalk', in both name and concept, is an opportunity for people to stand together against sexual violence and rights of women.

The seemingly provocative name of the movement emerged from the belief of certain individuals that women can avoid sexual assault by not dressing like a 'slut'.

The name, according to several activists, is a quick way to break the ice and open a dialogue about issues surrounding sexual assault.

"The name achieves its purpose. We are talking about it, we are questioning it, and it has raised eyebrows and that is the reason we all are here. Had that not happened, this cause, or this walk would also have been like any other movement that happens and nobody cares about. So, yes, the Besharmi Morcha'sSlutwalk Delhi chapter has raised eyebrows and today is the day we need to look beyond the name," said Stuti, a radio jockey.

"You have to look at the cause. The fact that we are here and any thinking individual would agree to the fact that no matter how a girl is dressed, it has nothing to do with the kind of treatment that is meted out to her. It is high time we listen to that," she added.

Many enthusiastic college students also participated in the highly charged protest, voicing their concerns despite claiming to be aware that merely one campaign 'would not change the attitudes and perceptions of the masses.'

"It is not safe to be on the streets of Delhi after dark. Even 8 o'clock is not a good time to get out. I know even through this walk, mindsets will not change immediately, but at least something is better than nothing. I am here to give my views and so are my friends," said Anchal Sabharwal, a college student.

The number of registered rape cases in India has increased almost manifold in the past decades, according to theNational Crime Records Bureau.

Also, despite growing awareness, most victims fear to report the crime due to many factors, including the 'shame' associated with the act in often traditional and conservative communities that prize virginity as a virtue.

The flimsy defence of 'provocation by the victim' has also come to light in a string of rape cases in the past, and shockingly, has even caused the burden of proof to shift from the accused to the victim in courts, claim women activists.

Bipasha's mom makes ramp debut!

Bipasha Basu's mother seems to be taking after her daughter as far modelling is concerned!

The actress' beautiful mother made her ramp debut alongside her darling daughter for a jewellery brand which Bipasha endorses at a jewellery show.

Its for the first time that Bipasha's mom was seen doing the catwalk and it was all for a noble cause.

An overjoyed Bipasha revealed, "I walked the ramp with my mother for the very first time for Gitanjali in association with Beti, against female foeticide."

Backing her initiative to bring in awareness about the cause, Bipasha added, "In our country the strength of a daughter is underestimated. I come from a family of three sisters where all three of us were given every kind of opportunity and encouragement by our parents!"

So how would the supermodel turned actor rate her mother's ramp walk, we wonder. "She for a first timer was so confident! I was very nervous though" concluded Bipasha.

Rakhi Sawant ka press conference

For an outspoken starlet who loves her plastic surgeon and keeps the media waiting for two hours, Rakhi Sawant — pouting, glamorous, crass, apologetic — is a bloody good sport.
At a press conference in Delhi to announce the launch of a comedy show about bizarre household anecdotes (Gajab Desh Ki Ajab Kahaniyaan, UTV), she fielded questions with — one can’t call it ‘grace’ — a panache she has often been associated with.
Reporters have been flown in for the press conference from Bhopal, Indore, Mumbai. Why was she two hours late, they ask, annoyed. Her sari, she says, got stolen. This is her excuse. She’s smiling, hair perfect, make up perfect, figure perfect.
Everyone laughs. Someone from the back asks her if she thinks she’s a bharitya nari, what with that snug blouse and low waist. She thrusts her torso out and she dares you —is anything uncovered? Huh?! Kuch dikh raha hai aapko? Then smiles.
Catcalls from the back of the hall.
Sawant knows her audience, the reporters, the cameramen asking her to pose ‘thoda aise side se’. She knows what they want. She invented the gallery she plays to, and still manages an innocence, a lack of self-consciousness in her raunchy replies.
The questions were bizarre, unprofessional. Which man does she want? Ramdev. A flurry of priceless quotes: “Apke liye Baba honge, mere woh swami hain”. She’s a fan of his kapalbharti technique — “Woh jo andar bahar andar bahar kartein hain — I love it!” More hooting.
When will she visit Bihar, asks a Patna correspondent. When Nitish invites me, she says. All answers are pat-pat. “Laloo had invited me. I met his whole family, his wife, his kids.”
What about social media? “Of course main Twitter par hoon!” Why not active? Time to show claws: “Why? It’s not like the others do it themselves. Everyone has PR people. I want to be original.”
Some man tries to get a bit cordial with her. A bodyguard slaps his wrist. She smiles even then. Bechara. Get in line. Aapki bhi baari ayegi. Camera phones are out in hordes. Some taking strategic top angle shots. She’s sitting on a throne, quite the queen B. Everyone else is saying, “Rakhi! Rakhi! Rakhi ji! Ma’am!”
Ma’am trashes arch rival Mallika Sherawhat. “Usko abroad se ab phenk diya hai woh Jackie Chan Whacky Chan ne” — “She’s been thrown out from abroad by that Jackie Chan or whatever he is.”
She also says she has no interest in Bollywood. Then yells, I am original! I am glamorous! She keeps saying this. And the way she keeps her audience in splits, poses for pictures, replies when asked anything, everything — it all suggests that despite the plastic and silicon (and not least of all for picking up a 3,000-calorie almond biscotti from the refreshment counter on her way out), she is a little more real than her tinsel town peers.

PMO dismisses report on Manmohan Singh looking the other way in 2G case

NEW DELHI: The PMO has dismissed suggestions that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had sought to look the other way in issuance of controversial 2G spectrum licenses and said suggestions had been made informally to the Department of Telecom to ensure that there was level-playing field between the existing operators and new entrants.

The Prime Minister's Office cited a communication of January 23, 2008 sent to DoT and insisted that it was in no way related to the "manner of grant of licence or charges for spectrum up to the threshold level".

"A number of unwarranted inferences have been drawn from this noting without considering the issue that was being examined and the context in which these directions were conveyed.

"In particular, an impression is sought to be created that the noting was in response to the Prime Minister being informed of steps being taken which he knew were inappropriate but he looked the other way," the PMO said in a statement as the government braced for an opposition attack on 2G issue in Parliament's Monsoon Session commencing from Monday.

The clarification came in the wake of a media report regarding a noting of the private secretary to the Prime Minister conveying the directions of the Prime Minister on a matter relating to the allocation of spectrum.

The noting in question was recorded on January 23, 2008 and stated that 'PM wants this informally shared with the Department (of Telecom). (He) does not want a formal communication and wants PMO to be at arms length.'

In its clarification, the PMO said the noting was on a note proposing consideration of an approach which included fixing of a 'threshold' level of spectrum that each operator must have in order to function with a minimum level of efficiency.

Frantic US debt talks near deal

Logo of the United States White House, especia...

WASHINGTON — US President Barack Obama's top senate ally said that White House talks on averting a disastrous debt default had resumed and were closing in on a compromise with just three days to act.
"There are negotiations going on at the White House to avert a catastrophic default on the nation's debt. There are many elements to be finalized and there is still a distance to go," he said in a late-night announcement.
Obama, Democratics, and Republicans have been hunting for a breakthrough deal that would ensure the world's richest nation will have cash to pay its bills past a midnight Tuesday (0400 Wednesdsay) deadline.
Reid said that, at the White House's request, he was putting off to 1:00 pm (1700 GMT) a test vote on his own plan to raise the $14.3 trillion US debt ceiling to allow time for a possible compromise.
"They've asked me to give everyone as much time as possible to reach an agreement -- if one can be reached," said the lawmaker. "I'm glad to see this move toward cooperation and compromise. I hope that it bears fruit."
The US economy hit that limit on May 16 and has used spending and accounting adjustments, as well as higher-than-expected tax receipts, to continue operating normally -- but can only do so through August 2.
Business and finance leaders have warned that default would send crippling aftershocks through the fragile US economy, still wrestling with stubbornly high unemployment of 9.2 percent in the wake of the 2008 global meltdown.
Official presidential portrait of Barack Obama...
Absent a deal, the US government will have to cut an estimated 40 cents out of every dollar it spends, forcing grim choices between defaulting on its debt or cutting back on programs like those that help the poor, disabled and elderly.
Any compromise would still need to clear the divided Democratic-led Senate and Republican-held House of Representatives, where conservatives close to the "Tea Party" movement have called for draconian belt-tightening.
Reid's announcement came after Obama called him and Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to an urgent White House summit with Vice President Joe Biden and spoke by telephone to top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell.
McConnell declared himself "confident and optimistic that we're going to get an agreement in the very near future" and predicted that most Democrats would "fall in line" behind any deal the president cut with Republicans.
"Senator McConnell and I are both confident that we're going to be able to come to some agreement with the White House and end this impasse," Republican House Speaker John Boehner said as they held a joint press conference.
Reid had poured cold water on the upbeat Republican message, bluntly telling McConnell that talk of a looming deal was "not true" and insisting that "merely saying you have an agremeent in front of television cameras doesn't make it so."
Hours later, Reid changed his tune and announced he was putting off a 1:00 am (0500 GMT) test vote on his own plan to ensure that the world's richest country has enough cash to pay its bill after an August 2 deadline.
Senate Republicans had been expected to kill the measure, citing what they considered to be insufficient guarantees of steep spending cuts to offset the increase in the US national debt.
Details of the burgeoning accord were not immediately available, but Reid said he was "confident" that a final deal would meet Obama's condition of putting off another debt fight to after his November 2012 reelection bid.
Earlier, aides said key points of contention included the overall size and makeup of spending cuts, and the creation of a special committee of lawmakers tasked with finding more savings in the near future.
They also included a fight over a enforcement mechanism to ensure that the new panel agree to future spending cuts, notably to cherished social safety net programs, according to a senior Republican Senate aide.
It was unclear whether the deal would be enough to talk ratings agencies down from downgrading the sterling Triple-A US debt rating, causing a spike in interest rates that would throw a wrench into the gears of the already sputtering US economy.
The acrimonious talks came after the Republican-led House of Representatives voted to kill Reid's proposal for raising the debt limit, a day after the Democratic-held Senate did the same to Boehner's plan.

Submuscular breast augmentation preop

Breast augmentation can add up to a hefty sum which may be difficult for the average person to pay. But, there are many breast augmentation financing options and information which you need to be aware of before scheduling your cosmetic surgery.

Your Insurance may not Cover You
Health insurance does not usually cover elective cosmetic procedures. Breast augmentation falls into that category. An exception is when the surgery is concerned with breast reconstruction after severe chest trauma or a mastectomy.

Read the Small Print
Health insurance varies from company to company so make sure to read the entirety of the contract to see exactly what your insurance can cover. Breast augmentation, like all major surgeries, is a conglomeration of many fees. This includes the anesthesia, the implants themselves, the surgeon's fee and the operative care before and after the surgery. Now your insurance could cover the anesthesia or the post operative care even if it does not cover the cost of the breast augmentation surgery itself. Call your company to inquire about their policies involving breast augmentation. You may be able to use your health insurance in addition to other breast augmentation financing plans to pay for additional charges.
