International Freight - The Infrastructure in Denmark

The economy in Denmark is largely dependent on imported raw materials and foreign trade. However, it is a net exporter of energy and food, so the international freight market is highly developed in Denmark.


Denmark's main exports are instruments, industrial machinery and food products. The United States of America is Denmark's largest trading partner outside Europe, with freight forwarding highly streamlined between Denmark and the United States, as well as all European countries.

In January 2008, the Danish Infrastructure Commission published a plan called‘The Danish Infrastructure 2030' setting out how the country will continue to improve its transport infrastructure, to build further on its already strong position and meet the challenges of the future. The main aim of the plan is to address issues of increased congestion on the road and rail networks, as traffic levels have been growing over the last decade and are expected to continue to grow. Unless addressed, this would put increasing pressure on freight forwarding  solutions and create logistical dilemmas for shipping companies.

On the national road network, the shipping company faces the greatest congestion problems in the Copenhagen area and in Eastern Jutland, in
particular the Triangle Region, Kolding-Vejle Fredericia.


On the rail network, as it is already at capacity on certain lines, there is limited potential to add extra services, without further development. This is a constraint on the potential for efficient international freight. The Danish Infrastructure Commission predicts that traffic on the national road network will increase by 70% by 2030, creating big congestion problems on the motorway network and feeder routes.

For the recent past, the freight transport infrastructure in Denmark has been based on ‘The Big H'. This is the major road and railway network that connects Denmark from east to west and from north to south. In addition, The Big H provides excellent links to neighbouring countries that are essential to trade and, as a result, to the freight company.

Although the Big H remains as the basis of the infrastructure plan for the future, it is planned to expand capacity in corridors where additional traffic is expected.

This will include a number of ring connections around Copenhagen, efficient secondary links from the main regions to The Big H, and a focus on gateways to the rest of the world, safeguarding a bright future for international freight and freight forwarding in Denmark.

The Future of Racing Bikes

Road bikes or racing bikes are designed to go as fast as possible while making sure of the rider's safety. Are electric bikes the future?

With the rise in the use of electric bikes, the question that must be asked is whether they will eventually make conventional bicycles obsolete. Last year 23 million were sold worldwide, and the number is expected to double by 2012, according to Electric Bikes Worldwide Reports, a biennial publication tracking the industry.

No one would argue with the fact that switching your commute from a car ride to a bike ride creates a host of benefits for both you and your surrounding environment. European governments warn the public about heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity; all of these can be combated by getting on your bike in the morning and commuting to work on two wheels instead of four. Exercise, even at moderate levels, helps to reduce stress and depression as well as improve mood and self-esteem. The financial benefits to be gained from cycling can be quite substantial, saving users money on commuting (compared to public or personal motorised transport), parking charges and gym memberships. At present in the UK, both E-bikes and Pedelecs are covered by this, although there are moves to make E-bikes conform to the same regulations as mopeds. The limits are: 200W continuous power (250W for tricycles and tandems), 15mph maximum assisted speed, maximum weight 40kgs (60kgs for tricycles and tandems). As long as your cycle is within these limits, and you are over 14, you can ride your bike legally on UK roads with no restrictions.

On top of these benefits, the electric bike compared to the traditional bicycle saves even more time because even though top speed is capped, electric bikes are able to keep a more constant speed, rather than slowing down on the tough or uphill stretches. This higher average speed actually makes electric bikes safer than conventional bicycles on the roads since fewer cars will overtake, and as A to B magazine points out, the faster your acceleration, the sooner you can get out of trouble.


So electric bikes offer safety advantages over regular bicycles, save you more money on transport, are more user friendly; and still provide healthy exercise.

Non-Lethal Weapons - Police Technology Targets Enhanced Safety

In movies like "Bad Boys" and "Lethal Weapon", renegade cops commonly race through the streets firing off round after round in hot pursuit of the bad guys - usually while simultaneously tossing off one-liners and demolishing everything in their paths. In real life, such actions often have more grim and serious consequences. Fortunately, non-lethal technologies are emerging to make apprehending suspects easier, and less dangerous for all involved.



One example is the StarChase system, an invention designed to take some of the peril out of high-speed pursuits. In the more than 100,000 chases that take place in the U.S. every year, risk levels are extremely high - for officers, suspects, drivers and pedestrians. StarChase technology helps to diminish such risks by replacing the need for a chase with a safer way to catch suspects. The system consists of a compressed-air launcher with laser targeting that mounts inside the grille of a police car and shoots out a homing device (containing an internal GPS receiver, transmitter and power supply). The homing device sticks to any vehicle it hits, and sends its location to dispatch. From there, a dispatcher or other trained professional views the vehicle's real-time movements on a digital roadmap and develops a strategy to intercept it. The StarChase system also automatically records all data, creating a historical record of the event.

While the StarChase gives police the ability to opt out of a dangerous chase and still nab the suspect, another new technology in the works could have a similar benefit - but for officers on foot. The LED Incapacitator could help officers keep weapons in their holsters. Developed in collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security, among others, the LED Incapacitator comes from Intelligent Optical Systems Inc. (IOS) - a creator of cutting-edge technologies in optical sensing and instrumentation. Similar in appearance to a flashlight, an officer shines the device in a suspect's eyes. Using extremely bright, strobe sequences of light in different colors, the invention flashes in a pre-defined pattern that the human brain cannot immediately adjust to. This creates a "wall of light" that blinds and dizzies the suspect and fogs the officer's location - giving the law enforcement agent a brief window of time to subdue the suspect. Despite its power, the LED Incapacitator does not have a high enough intensity to actually harm a suspect's eyes.



Both the StarChase and the LED Incapacitator are garnering interest from law enforcement as the movement toward non-lethal technologies continues to gain momentum. The StarChaser is currently available for police departments to purchase from representatives throughout the United States, while the LED Incapacitator is still in development with IOS. Unfortunately, while both inventions could potentially help make real-world streets safer in the near future, they'll probably do nothing to stop those loveable movie cops from obliterating entire city blocks and mindlessly unloading their weapons on suspected perps.
